Tasting Notes:

Nose: A deep, almost buttery fragrance that’s laced with sweeter, floral notes reminiscent of the Clynelish. It then opens up to aromas reflecting the Autumn season, such as honey, baked goods, and a touch of vanilla.

Palate: Welcomes a burst of sweetness and bold spices courtesy of the use of sherry casks. Notes of candied fruits, nuts, and dark chocolate mingle with fresh spices such as nutmeg, cinnamon, star anise, and cardamom.

Finish: A touch of water intensifies the floral notes and syrupy character while introducing an underlying smoothness. It also lengthens the rich fruitiness and complexity, with a sweet and aromatic finish.

Johnnie Walker is the world’s biggest-selling brand of blended Scotch whisky. Established in the mid-19th Century, Johnnie Walker has a long distilling history and today is sold in a majority of countries around the world. The standard flagship whisky of the portfolio is the Red Label. It is intended for mixing rather than consuming neat and has no age statement on the label. Compartively, the Black Label is aged for 12 years and is widely regarded as a standard bearer for the blended category.

Other whiskies in the collection include the Johnnie Walker King George V which is produced as a memento to the monarch who granted the first Royal Warrant to the brand in 1934. Depending on the label of Johnnie Walker produced, up to 35 to 40 different malts and grains can contribute to the blend. The brand has its origins in John Walker’s grocery shop in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. He died in 1857, three years before blended whisky was made legal in Scotland, and so it was his son and grandsons that were mainly responsible for developing the Walker’s blend. The distinctive square bottle was introduced in 1860.

In 1908, the name was changed from Walker’s Kilmarnock Whiskies to Johnnie Walker Whisky, and the image of the striding Regency gentleman was created by the cartoonist Tom Brown. In the following year Black Label and Red Label were introduced. For much of the 20th Century, these labels and Johnnie Walker Swing – in a bottle designed for ships – were the only expressions. Now several other color labels have joined the portfolio, including the Blue Label, one of the most expensive blended whiskies available in the world.

Johnnie Walker joined Distillers Company in 1925, which was bought in turn by Guinness in 1986. Since 1997, the brand has been a cornerstone of the Diageo line-up.
