Origins of Sangria

Sangria is believed to have originated from more than 2,000 years ago when the Romans made their way through the Iberian Peninsula and planted vineyards along the way.

Back then, drinking water was deemed unsafe so it was often reinforced with wine, spices, and herbs.

The earliest versions of what we now know as sangria was popularized in England and France in the 1800s and it was then popularized after arriving in the U.S. at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York.

Even with its global popularity and common association with Spain, there is no official formula for sangria in Spain. Spanish people often enjoy a drink similar to the sangria, known as tinto de verano.

To make the best sangrias, you need these components:

  • fruit (apples or oranges)
  • orange juice
  • sweetener (brown or cane sugar)
  • liquor (brandy or rum)
  • bold, fruity, dry Spanish red wine (like Tempranillo, Garnacha, or other Rioja wine)
  • ice

This recipe is a 6-ingredient traditional red sangria that is fruity, sweet, smooth, refreshing, and boozy. We’ll be using brandy for this recipe as the scent fits in a sangria recipe.
